The article examines the decade-long business relationship between Austria's OMV and Russia's Gazprom, analyzing its role in Austria's energy security policy. It highlights OMV's strategic importance as Austria's leading gas supplier and its involvement in major European gas projects, including Nord Stream 2. The study contextualizes these relations within Austria's historical dependence on Russian gas, tracing their origins to the 1960s and their intensification in the 21st century. The article underscores how Austria's geographical position and energy infrastructure, such as the Baumgarten gas hub, have made it a critical transit point for Russian gas to Western Europe. The first section explores OMV's role in Austria's energy sector, emphasizing its state-controlled structure and its dual focus on gas imports and petrochemical activities. The article details OMV's long-term contracts with Gazprom, including the 2006 agreement extended to 2040, and its participation in the Nord Stream 2 consortium. These agreements solidified Austria's reliance on Russian gas, with imports reaching 80% of its total gas consumption by 2023. The article also highlights OMV's investments in Russian gas fields, such as the Yuzhno-Russkoye deposit, which further deepened its ties with Gazprom. The second section addresses the challenges and consequences of Austria's dependence on Russian gas, particularly after Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014 and its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Austria's reluctance to impose sanctions on Russian gas imports is analyzed as a reflection of its energy dependency. However, the article also discusses Austria's efforts to diversify its energy sources, including investments in renewable energy and LNG imports. The termination of OMV's long-term contract with Gazprom in late 2024, following arbitration disputes and geopolitical tensions, marks a turning point in Austria's energy policy. The article concludes by emphasizing the risks of over-reliance on a single energy supplier, particularly one as politically volatile as Russia. It praises Austria's gradual shift toward renewable energy and energy independence, which has mitigated the potential economic and political fallout of its reliance on Russian gas. The study provides valuable insights into the intersection of energy policy, geopolitics, and corporate strategy in the context of European energy security.
